Tettegouche State Park is one of the busiest stops on Minnesota's North Shore, and for good reason: High Falls on the Baptism River, the cliffs at Shovel Point and Palisade Head, inland lakes and a long stretch of the Superior Hiking Trail. Staying close means you can hit the trails early, come back for lunch, and be out again for sunset without a long drive. Three of the homes I manage are in Silver Bay and Beaver Bay, just south of the park on Highway 61.

Kennedy Creek Superior View: Closest to the Park
Kennedy Creek sits on 12 private acres bordered by state land in Silver Bay, with panoramic Lake Superior views from the deck and living room. It's the closest of my homes to Tettegouche and a good fit for couples, small families or two couples: two bedrooms, two full bathrooms, sleeps 6. Come back from High Falls to the private sauna and a fire under the stars.

Trail Shack: Between Two State Parks
Trail Shack is on West Road in Beaver Bay, positioned between Tettegouche and Gooseberry Falls state parks with Split Rock Lighthouse nearby, so it works well if you want to see more than one park on the same trip. It's steps from the Gitchi-Gami State Trail and has direct access to local ATV and snowmobile trails. Three bedrooms, one bath, sleeps 6, with a barrel sauna, fire pit and in-unit laundry.

White Rock: Room for Eight
White Rock is an updated three-bedroom, two-bath home in Beaver Bay that sleeps 8, with Lake Superior views from the deck, a game room with shuffleboard and a backyard fire pit. The listing puts it about 11 minutes from Tettegouche and 13 minutes from Gooseberry Falls, which makes it an easy base for a family or two couples who want both parks.
Planning Your Tettegouche Trip
- Start at the visitor center. The main entrance is right on Highway 61 just northeast of Silver Bay. The visitor center has exhibits, restrooms and trail maps, and the Shovel Point trail starts nearby.
- High Falls. The Baptism River's High Falls is about 70 feet tall and is often called the highest waterfall entirely within Minnesota. Pair it with Two Step Falls on the same outing.
- Shovel Point. A short out-and-back hike to a rocky point with big views up and down the shoreline. Go early on summer and fall weekends when parking fills up.
- Palisade Head. A separate section of the park a few miles south, with a steep, narrow road up to a cliff-top overlook. Great at sunrise; keep kids and dogs close to you near the edge.
- Park permit. Minnesota state parks require a vehicle permit, either a day pass or a year-round pass, to park inside the park.
- Every season works. Summer is for waterfalls and the lake, fall color usually peaks in late September into early October, and winter brings cross-country skiing and quiet, icy shoreline views.
